Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders definitely has potential behind the camera, but after US Weekly published photos of him and Kristen Stewart having an affair, both of them have taken a PR hit.
Having the two reunite for the Snow White and the Huntsman 2 is awkward for all parties involved, especially for Universal who has to bankroll the movie and sell it to viewers.
While not definite, the studio is thinking of doing a Snow White and the Huntsman spinoff, to be directed by Sanders, that will exclude Stewart's Snow White all together and will instead focus on Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman character.
This way, the studio can cash in on the success of the first movie and not have to deal with the negative PR associated with Stewart.
Of course, once Breaking Dawn Part II opens huge, Universal may reconsider this spinoff idea.
However, the studio is in no hurry if the following piece of new is true.
Twitch is hearing that Universal is in early talks with Sanders for him to direct Tom Cruise in the Van Helsing remake, which may shoot after Cruise is done with Doug Liman's All You Need Is Kill.
While Sanders only has one movie to his name, the studio has enough confidence in the director to hand him another big budget movie.
This is a preemptive move to keep Sanders' within Universal's fold while having him work on something that doesn't have the baggage of the Snow White movies.
After the heat is off Sanders and Stewart, they can start rolling on that Snow White sequel again.
