Capcom Aggressively Wants Partnerships Outside of Japan ...

When it comes to the Japanese Video Game Industry, it is kind of a small fish in a very large pond. When it comes to Capcom in the Japanese Game Industry, it is kind of like one of two big fish (The other being Nintendo) in a small pond. The reason for the relevance is because Capcom is doing something that all the other Japanese developers don?t seem to care about and that is expand outside of the Japanese thinking process of games. Now to be completely fair, the Japanese market strategy for their games are successful but mainly in Japan only. Games like Final Fantasy XIII, Legend of Heroes: Trials in the Sky, Record of Agarast War Zero, and many others may not be a formula that is successful outside of Japan but within its shores it is doing just well. However, through Japan?s constant vigil to please their home country over everybody else, they seem to fall into a group-think mentality with a very narrow-minded view of other ideas especially those which do not originate within Japan. This is a negative turn which may result to the prediction that the Japanese Game Industry may implode on itself.

Capcom is one of the companies that is changing with the times and trying their best to continue to satisfy gamers not just in their country but outside as well. I personally like this marketing plan in which they are concentrating on customers and seeing other developers and publishers not as competition but as very good friends in the industry even if some of their attempts may falter somewhat. Over the past three years, almost every game Capcom has published was developed or co-developed with another company. I have provided a list of games below and listed the company who developed or co-developed the game mentioned.

  1. Street Fighter IV ? Co-developed with Dimps
  2. Super Street Fighter IV ? Co-developed with Dimps
  3. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition ? Co-developed with Dimps
  4. Bionic Commando (2009) ? Developed by GRIN
  5. Bionic Commando Rearmed ? Developed by GRIN
  6. Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 - Developed by Fatshark
  7. Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars ? Developed by Eighting
  8. Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds ? Co-developed with Eighting
  9. Dark Void ? Developed by Airtight Games
  10. Dark Void Zero - Developed by Ocean Interactive
  11. Dead Rising 2 ? Developed by Blue Castle Games (Now Capcom Studios Vancouver)
  12. Asura?s Wrath ? Developed by Cyberconnect2
  13. DmC ? Developed by Ninja Theory
  14. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City ? Developed by Slant Six Games

Not to mention, Capcom is usually the primary publisher of most games outside of Japan for the Japanese market. The PS2 titles in the God of War Series along with God of War: Chains of Olympus on the PSP were published by Capcom as it pertains to the Japanese Video Game Industry. This may show just how much of a good repertoire Capcom has with the rest of the industry outside of Japan. Despite their movements in the right direction to not disappear in the shadows of Japan?s predicted implosion, Capcom wants to still be more of a viable company in the industry but in sense probably the first third party publisher to really appeal across the entire video game industry. True there are companies who are bigger publishers than Capcom like EA or maybe Activision but they do lack pull in the Asian market. Capcom is a company that does a range of average to awesome in all markets within the industry either it be publishing or development.

In a recent public memo on Capcom?s Official Investor?s Relations Website, the company has stated they are aggressively seeking the opportunities and partnerships for the purpose of creating game content which will be universally accepted among the gaming community. To do this, Capcom are not opting for merging with local developers or publishers for they believe it will limit their license potential and not increase sales outside of Japan. In short, the statement is not far off from what they previously said back in 2010 when mentioning they would aggressively pursue partnerships with developers and publishers outside of Japan.

In all respects to Capcom, I find this to be a smart move since they are one of the few Japanese game developers/publishers to truly succeed outside of Japan. Other companies are imploding on themselves mostly out of necessity and their inability or their choice to be unable to expand to foreign gaming ideas. In the long run, I believe this will truly be beneficial for the Japanese game developer/publisher as well as other developers. Just look at Blue Castle Games for an example and you?ll see what I mean.
