What are the perils in family businesses like this and does anyone have any experience in buying property in other countries (sorry two questions). Any info is appreciated

Answer by Catmama66 As long as you KNOW that you ALL will get along great and be able to coordinate the times that each will be there for vacation. Seems that EVERYONE will want the same holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day?) But if your family has no problems getting along and are very compromising folks then you will probably be ok. Renting that far away and not having the daily ?hands on? is risky because you have to know that you can trust those managing it for you to keep good renters in there and not people that will trash it. Or you just have to have the money to do regular cosmetic maintainence year round.

is reporting that Microsoft is planning on offering streaming services
from Comcast and Verizon through Xbox Live as soon as next week. If
true, the deal will bring a wealth of new content to Xbox
Live, turning it into the full-blown media service Microsoft has been
trying to create since they first launched the service. It should also
give us more opportunities to see what our Xbox Live friends are doing
without feeling like we're being Nosey Nellys.
In order to take advantage of these rumored features,
users will already need to be subscribers to either the Philadelphia-based
Comcast and the New York-based Verizon?s cable services. Odds are this means
that the content, for the most part, will be limited to the "On
Demand" offerings, which features a selection of streaming television
shows and movies.
But beyond working with the Verizon and Comcast, Microsoft
is supposedly also in talks with HBO, Crackle, Bravo, and Syfy to bring even
more streaming content to the system. If these deals go through and become
popular, we expect to find even more providers going in this direction and
adding their content to Xbox Live. Both HBO and Syfy have proprietary streaming
services, and this would be a good step forward towards making their content
more accessible without adding them to pre-existing streaming companies like
Netflix or Hulu.
While it's a far cry from having access to full-blown
cable with thousands of channels and millions of options, it's still a great
move for Microsoft. It really would help sell the idea of Xbox Live being a
media center instead of just a game machine, and making it a viable replacement for spending $20 a month for another cable box.

I am a sucker for singing contest reality shows, but my hands-down favorite is The Sing-Off. The show premiered its third season last Monday and features acappella groups from across the country who arrange and sing their own versions of popular songs. They are then judged by the incomparable and yet "normal" Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles, and Sean Stockman (shout out to the BTW class of '93 and our senior song, Boyz 2 Men's "End of the Road," which in hindsight is a really depressing senior song but great to sing en masse, tears flowing.)
I don't listen to a great deal of pop music so the show introduces me to what people, and I assume mainly teenagers, are listening to. The show started with the University of Rochester's Yellowjackets singing the uplifting World Cup theme from K'Naan, "Wavin' Flag." Great beat, great lyrics:

Do we really want our young people to believe that love means threatening to do violence to your body and brain until the person reciprocates your level of emotion? And yes, I know drama sells. In this day and age, Bruno Mars is not going to sell songs about calmly understanding that sometimes a person just doesn't feel the same way about you as you do for them, and that at the end of the day, you'll be okay. There's a reason that Romeo and Juliet were not in their 30's but were teenagers. The odds that a teenager will look at a list of multiple choice answers concerning how to respond to heartbreak and choose the most dramatic one is fairly high. Thankfully, most of us reach our 20's and our frontal lobe finishes developing and we realize that if answer C. ends in death, DON'T PICK C!!!
I was saddened to see the violent trend in song selection continue on the show with Urban Method, a group that features a rapper, choosing to perform Eminem and Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie." This song tells the story of a couple where the man beats the woman and she stays because she both likes like it and likes pretending that when he says he won't do it again he's telling the truth. The woman sings the chorus again and again:
"Just gonna stand there and watch me burn Well that's all right because I like the way it hurts Just gonna stand there and watch me cry Well that's all right because I love the way you lie..."
The man's part, which walks you through his possessive rage as well as the incidents of abuse and physical threats toward the "woman he loves," at least acknowledges that what he is feeling and doing is wrong, evil, and something he wishes he didn't do:
"...it's awful I feel so ashamed I snap, 'Who's that dude?' I don't even know his name I laid hands on her, I never stoop so low again..."
She, of course, responds with the chorus telling him it's all right, I like the way it hurts.
Now, I am not terribly na?ve. Are there many real, non-rapper/pop artist people involved in sick, sadistic relationships? Sadly, I'm sure, yes. Are there much sicker and perverse songs out there about those types of relationships? I imagine so. But those songs are not being sung by young kids, a cappella, at 7pm CST on The Sing-Off where the judges responded, "Wow. That was powerful." I wanted to yell, "No!! Sadistic and sick is not the same thing as powerful!" And bopping around the Sing-Off stage talking about shooting ourselves in the brain for someone or tying the person we love to a bed and setting the house on fire in order to ensure that she never loves anyone else, is normalizing some pretty disturbing behavior.
With these violent lyrics filled our young people's mouths like gravel, is there any hope they'll ever sing "Wavin' Flag?"

EL-ARISH, Egypt ? Security officials say gunmen have attacked Egypt's gas pipeline to Israel in the northern Sinai Peninsula.
It is the sixth attack on the pipeline since the popular uprising that ousted longtime Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak in February.
The officials say assailants in two pickup trucks struck a pumping station on the pipeline about 15 miles (25 kilometers) west of the region's main city of el-Arish before dawn Tuesday, causing a loud explosion and fire.
It was not immediately clear whether the blast was the result of gunfire or whether the gunmen planted explosives and detonated them.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief the media, said one person was injured in the attack.
ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2011) ? Scientists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) and the University of Southern California (USC) have uncovered intriguing new evidence helping to explain one of the ways in which a stem cell's fate can be determined.
The new data show how the "marking" of DNA sequences by groups of methyl molecules -- a process called methylation -- can influence the type of cell a stem cell will become. The cellular maturation process, called differentiation, has long been thought to be affected by methylation. Subtle changes in methylation patterns within subsets of a particular cell type have now been observed and closely scrutinized, and they reveal some intriguing mechanisms at work in the process.
A team led by postdoc Dr. Emily Hodges, working in the laboratory of CSHL Professor and HHMI Investigator Gregory Hannon, studied how methylation changes in blood stem cells can affect whether a given stem cell will differentiate into either a myeloid cell or a lymphoid cell. These are the two major lineages of mature blood cells. Sophisticated mathematical analyses of the data were performed under the direction of USC Professor Andrew D. Smith.
The study, which will appear in print October 7 in the journal Molecular Cell, generated some surprising findings that challenge currently held theories about how methylation operates. First, it demonstrated that methylation patterns are more dynamic than they are often thought to be. "It's not a question of methylation being 'on' or 'off' at a given site in the genome," explains Hodges. "We find, instead, an interesting fluctuation of the boundaries of regions that are free of methylation marks. This fact, in turn, can have a profound impact upon cell fate."
Areas lacking methylation, called hypomethylated regions, or HMRs, tend to coincide with so-called CpG islands, sites in the genome where adjacent "Cs" and "G's" -- cytosine and guanine nucleotides -- are seen in strings of repeats. These unmethylated regions tend to be ones associated with nearby genes that are capable of being expressed. In contrast, sites in the genome that are methylated are typically not expressed.
The new study, which looks at these areas at high resolution in cells of the different blood cell lineages and in blood stem cells, finds that in many cases, a core portion of the unmethylated region is shared in common, but that adjacent areas, sometimes called "CpG shores" -- the outlying areas around CpG islands -- differ markedly in breadth. The CSHL-USC team refines the notion of islands and shores, preferring to describe the narrowing and widening of the "shoreline" as a tidal phenomenon.
"We observed that the boundaries of these unmethylated regions goes in and out, like the tides," says Hodges. "The key question is what drives these changes. We found that the width of these regions depends on the gene that is associated with the region. We showed in blood cells that the variation is lineage-specific."
The team deduced this after making close study of the methylation patterns in genomic regions containing genes known from other research to be expressed specifically in lymphoid cells, but not in myeloid cells, or vice versa. In these cases, all blood cells share a narrow "core" region of hypomethylation; but only in one lineage did the unmethylated region widen -- a widening that opens the promoter of the "underlying" gene to the cellular machinery initiating gene expression. In other words, the lack of methylation over a wider area enables the underlying gene to be activated -- only in the specified cell-type, but not in any of the others.
Another striking observation made from this data is the directional preference of this expansion. For example, in the widening of the unmethylated region seen in the case of the lymphoid cell, the direction of the widening was toward the area occupied by the underlying gene, which in this case was a gene encoding a B cell surface marker called CD22.
It has generally been thought that methylation is a stable epigenetic mark and that changes in methylation are unidirectional; and further, that cells become increasingly methylated as they move through the differentiation process toward their mature identity. And in fact, the only known direction of active change is from an unmethylated state to a methylated state.
The new data suggests, however, that dynamic changes in methylation status may be possible. The relevant evidence comes from blood stem cells, which were observed to have methylation patterns that the team describes as "intermediately methylated," seemingly in dynamic equilibria of the two extreme states of "methylated" and "unmethylated."
According to Hodges, this raises the possibility that methylation might in fact be bidirectional, and that there might be an as yet undiscovered, active mechanism that performs de-methylation. No known enzyme has this ability to remove methyl groups from DNA; DNA methyltransferase is the well-known enzyme that catalyzes the addition of methyl groups.
Yet another of the team's unexpected findings concerns the position of HMRs relative to know genic regions. While unmethylated regions tend to be associated with nearby genes that are capable of being expressed, the team found, according to Hodges, "a lot of HMRs located far away from any annotated gene locus." One notable thing about these regions, she says, "is that they were highly enriched for binding sites of specific regulatory molecules that are involved in chromatin organization."
Chromatin consists of DNA and the protein complexes called histones around which genomic DNA is packed. In a given cell, chromatin organization, like methylation, helps to determine whether specific genes can be expressed or not.
