Code hints Microsoft may add direct music playback to SkyDrive

Code hints Microsoft may add music playback to SkyDrive

Microsoft has been busy streamlining SkyDrive to make the most of our time in the cloud, but it hasn't yet cut out the middleman for audio playback; if a song wasn't obtained through a channel like Xbox Music, it won't play online in Microsoft's universe. LiveSide has made some code discoveries suggesting the storage service could at least partly remedy the problem with a web-based music player. We don't know much of how it would work, although the presence of interface elements hints that Microsoft is at least committed to development. The real dilemma is an absence of clues as to when (and if) playback will ever go live -- and there's nothing that would reveal whether or not SkyDrive is the heart of an upcoming option to upload personal tracks for Xbox Music streaming. If the music player mentions reflect more than just experimentation, however, the Redmond team may soon have a more direct answer to the likes of Amazon Cloud Player or Google Music.

Aimee
's?Daily Notes: Dec. 1, 2012

Yes! ?Aimee's Daily Notes is back! ?Everyday, I came across so many things that I like to share with my friends and community. ?Plus, there are special events that we organize and others in the community that we enjoy sharing with our friends.

I did Aimee's Daily Notes everyday for years since 2007. ?Lately I have been extremely busy and had to pause for a while on the Daily Notes posts. ?However, people have been emailing me asking, "What happened to Aimee's Daily Notes?" ?Another wrote, "When are you going to do Aimee's Daily Notes again?" ?

We tried many new ways to post the Daily Notes with ease. ?For example, at one point, we even created pages every day. ?That took a lot of time every day. ?Then we tried having a sub domain, and that took even more time. ?So, how am I going to keep up the tradition without taking too much time and yet still have the fun that we always had? ?

Well, I was browsing my sites yesterday for something else and came across our old Aimee's Daily Notes. It was so simple, very simple indeed. ?See, with fancy technology popping up everyday, we can all get overwhelmed with new gadgets and new ways to do things, and some of them can be cumbersome.

Then along came the newer and better things we have today, ?my Nexus 7 tablet, my Sansung Galaxy 3 Android phones with data plans, and so forth. ?I can do updates on my sites on-the-go!! ?Yes!! ?Even with my busy schedule, I can update my sites whereas before, it couldn't be done with any of the little devices. Now it can!

So, here we go! ?We are going back to combine the old ways with the new to keep up with our daily posts on this site and Aimee's Daily Notes.?

Thank you all for persistance in asking for our Aimee's Daily Notes. ?Like the old days, we post everything that belongs to that month on one page. ?We just keep adding to it on a daily basis. ?We will update the date information and so the latest Notes will be posted on top of the site every time. ?With our Samsung Galaxy 3 and our Nexus 7 tablet, we can log in to our site and update as we travel along the way.?

I'm excited to be able to do the things I used to do and love to do. ?Like Aimee's Daily Notes that we did back in Decembeb 2009?-?check it out.

We will use the same format and start sharing great tips, and great people around town for our community again! ?This is our first of the month, December 1, 2012, Daily Notes. ?Enjoy!!

Slovenes choose leader amid uncertainty

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) ? Small, crisis-hit Slovenia is choosing a president on Sunday amid growing discontent with cost-cutting measures designed to avoid an international bailout.

The vote comes just days after anti-austerity protests in the capital erupted in clashes that left 15 people injured, triggering fears that the economic crisis could push the normally placid Alpine nation of 2 million into instability.

Developments in Slovenia are being closely watched in the European Union. The tiny eurozone nation has promised to follow through with budget cuts and banking changes so it won't have to ask for EU help.

The presidential runoff pits anti-austerity incumbent Danilo Turk against former Prime Minister Borut Pahor, who has supported some of the government's budget measures during his campaign. Pahor won more votes in the first round last month and is the front-runner in polls.

Although the presidency is a largely ceremonial post in Slovenia, the elected leader commands political authority and will play an important role in guiding Slovenes as the country faces painful reforms.

Worried Slovenes said they hoped the election would bring a sense of security.

"I think things will start to calm down from today," said 86-year-old retiree Mihael Grund, who ventured out early despite drizzle and cold to cast his ballot. "We have had so much tension recently and that is a big worry for us."

But, new protests are planned for next week. Thousands joined demonstrations in Ljubljana on Friday and in the second-largest city of Maribor earlier in the week. Both rallies ended in riots, with police using water cannons and tear gas to repel rock-throwing extremists.

Senior police official Stanislav Venger said on Saturday police was attacked by organized groups of hooligans who were prepared to fight ? unusual for Slovenia where demonstrations are usually calm and smaller in number.

Slovenia, which was once an economic star among EU newcomers when it joined in 2004, has faced one of the worst recessions of the 17 nations that use the euro currency. Its economy has shrunk more than 8 percent since 2009 and continues to decline, resulting in a sharp drop in exports and living standards and a surge in unemployment, which now stands at about 12 percent.

Prime Minister Janez Jansa's center-right government has launched pension and labor reform, made public sector cuts, and moved to recapitalize the nation's banks, which are at the center of the crisis because they are burdened by bad loans.

Pahor has called for unity in the face of the crisis, promising to "bring hope" to disillusioned Slovenes and show the EU that the country can pull out of the crisis on its own.

Turk, however, has been a fierce critic of the reform plans. He has argued that Jansa's cost-cutting has not been equally distributed and will only hurt the poorest, eliminating the long-cherished welfare state.

Analysts have warned that the turnout among Slovenia's 1,7 million voters could be low, in another sign of voters' discontent. Some Slovenes, like 35-year-old high-school teacher Igor Vulic, say that no politician can bring about any change and that Slovenia needs new leaders.

"They should just all go," he said.

Police: Hero instructor fought son in arrow attack

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) ? A Wyoming community college instructor killed in a grisly classroom murder-suicide was hailed as a hero Saturday, with police saying he gave his students time to flee by distracting and fighting off his son after the younger man barged into his computer science class and shot him in the head with a high-powered bow and arrow.

The arrow severely wounded James Krumm, 56, but he managed to wrestle with son Christopher Krumm, 25, of Vernon, Conn., on Friday while the handful of students in the Casper College classroom escaped.

Christopher Krumm had just stabbed to death his father's live-in girlfriend at the couple's home two miles away.

When police arrived at the classroom after the bow-and-arrow attack, they found Christopher Krumm bleeding from self-inflicted knife wounds and taking his last breaths.

James Krumm was dead, Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said.

"I can tell you the courage that was demonstrated by Mr. Krumm was absolutely without equal," he said, adding that the instructor's actions could offer some measure of comfort to those affected by the killings.

Authorities believe "around six" students were in the classroom when Christopher Krumm entered, Casper police spokesman Justin Smith said. No students were hurt.

Walsh said police still were trying to figure out what motivated Christopher Krumm to attack his father and girlfriend, 42-year-old Heidi Arnold, a math instructor at the college. Arnold died of multiple stab wounds.

After shooting his father with the arrow, Christopher Krumm stabbed himself, then fatally stabbed his father in the chest in a struggle in the classroom, Walsh said.

Police began getting reports about the attack on Arnold soon after they responded by the dozen to the campus attack. Authorities locked down the campus for two hours while they scoured the grounds for any other attackers. They were reassured that Christopher Krumm acted alone.

He had smuggled the compound bow ? a type much more powerful and effective for hunting than a simple, wooden bow ? onto campus beneath a blanket, Walsh said.

He said Christopher Krumm also had two knives with him, and the knife used was "very large."

Arnold's body was found in the gutter of her street, and evidence suggested much of the attack occurred outside the home, Walsh said.

Neighbor Heather Meier said she came home from work Friday afternoon after picking up her 7-year-old daughter from school, and the two saw Arnold's body still lying in the street.

"As soon as we got home, we just shut the curtains," she said Saturday. "You know, tried to just watch some TV, have some snacks, mind our own business."

Across the street from her home, crime tape cordoned off Krumm and Arnold's faded blue and yellow house and part of the street. Meier, who has lived in the neighborhood for two years, said she met Arnold and James Krumm only once a few months ago and described them as quiet and very private.

Casper College instructor Kevin McDermott said Arnold and James Krumm were well-liked on campus.

"I knew these people pretty well, so it's hurting me. ... It's breaking my heart," said McDermott, who teachers algebra and computer networking at the school. "They were really good, kind-hearted people. People like Jim and Heidi are what make Casper College such a great college."

McDermott described James Krumm as a "real kind and gentle-mannered guy" who was well-respected by his students.

"Computer science majors took most of their classes from Jim. He was their adviser, and he had a big impact on them," he said.

McDermott added Arnold was a great teacher who "taught the tough stuff" and maintained a sunny disposition ? "a person who always had a smile on her face."

Chris Unruh, a student in one of Arnold's pre-calculus classes this fall, said she was a kind instructor who was excited about recently getting two dogs.

"She cared about her students," said Unruh, 18. "She wanted all of them to succeed."

Investigators said Christopher Krumm had recently driven to Casper from Connecticut and had been staying at a local hotel. He had no significant history of encounters with police.

Authorities were uncertain what went awry in his relationship with his father.

"It's difficult to say. I don't think it was very close," Walsh said.

In Vernon, Conn., police Sgt. Timothy O'Connor said officers executed a search warrant at Christopher Krumm's last known address Friday to help authorities in Casper. He didn't know what investigators were looking for or may have found at the home.

"Whatever was recovered will be turned over to Wyoming because it is an active investigation," O'Connor said.

Christopher Krumm's previous addresses include one in the western Massachusetts city of Springfield and others in the Colorado cities of Golden, Fort Collins and Lakewood.

Casper, population 56,000, is about 250 miles northwest of Denver and Wyoming's second-largest city after the state capital, Cheyenne. Wyomingites refer to Casper as the "Oil City" because it is a hub of the state's oil industry.

Casper College is one of seven colleges in Wyoming's community college system. The campus was mostly quiet Saturday morning. Fathers and sons shot hoops in the school gym. A small group of drama students rehearsed a play in the school theater just across the street from the attack.

The building where the attack happened remained cordoned off by police tape that whipped in a brisk wind. A security guard let students back in, one at a time, to retrieve belongings they'd left behind.

Andra Charter, a 20-year-old sophomore, emerged with a coffee mug. She recalled hearing screams outside her biology class before getting word about what had happened.

"As we were walking out, there was a girl screaming, 'There's somebody stabbing Mr. Krumm!'" Charter said.

James Krumm was head of the college's computer science department. He was born north of London and also spent part of his childhood in Germany, according to the college website.

He held degrees from Casper College, a bachelor's degree and MBA from the University of Wyoming and a master's in computer science from Colorado State University.

Arnold held a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Oregon and a bachelor's degree in math from University of California Davis.

The college planned a candlelight vigil and memorial service Tuesday.

Map locates train derailment and hazardous spill in New Jersey

(AP) ? A signal may have malfunctioned on a southern New Jersey bridge where a train derailed, causing a hazardous chemical to spew into the air and leading to health problems, an evacuation, tricky cleanup decisions and broader questions about the condition of railway infrastructure.

No serious injuries were reported in the Friday morning accident. But the U.S. Coast Guard said Saturday night that the evacuation of 12 city blocks near the Mantua Creek site would remain in effect as a precaution. Teams also were monitoring the air quality and collecting water samples, the Coast Guard said.

National Transportation Safety Board chairman Deborah Hersman said the crew on the train told investigators that when they approached the Mantua Creek bridge before 7 a.m. Friday, the signal light was red, telling them not to cross. She said the crew found it unusual to get a red light at that hour of the day.

They used a radio signal to try to change the signal to green, but it did not work, Hersman said. She said the conductor got off the train and inspected the aging bridge. When it appeared to be OK, she said, the engineer called for ? and received ? permission from a dispatcher to go through the red light and cross the bridge.

Only the two locomotives and the first five cars on the southbound train got across the bridge before seven cars derailed. Hersman said the engine was moving 8 mph before the accident ? under the 10 mph speed limit.

Hersman said investigators were trying to determine whether other train crews had had the same signal issue lately and whether the signal problems had anything to do with the accident.

Four of the derailed cars, including three that ended up partially in the creek, contained vinyl chloride, an ingredient in the common plastic PVC. A gas, vinyl chloride can induce respiratory problems, dizziness and other health effects after short-term exposure ? and liver problems and other complications after high levels of exposure over time.

The accident ripped a hole inside one of the tankers, causing the gas to escape.

More than 70 people went to an emergency room Friday, none of them with life-threatening injuries.

A handful of nearby homes were evacuated Friday; some residents were allowed to return hours later after some of the chemical dissipated into the air and the rest turned into a solid and settled back into the tanker. But Friday evening, residents in the 12 blocks near the site were ordered evacuated.

State Assemblyman John Burzichelli, a former Paulsboro mayor serving as an emergency management spokesman, said the chemical levels spiked as the temperatures dropped and the breeze died down Friday evening so that gas escaping the tanker lingered nearby longer.

Conrail, the owner of the tracks, put up residents in 106 hotel rooms Friday night. And the Coast Guard said Conrail will again open a center in the Paulsboro Fire Department to help people affected by the accident.

Residents said they were told to be ready to stay away from their homes for three days, and possibly longer.

Some said they had tough nights away from pets, who were taken to an animal shelter. Others were frustrated with the late call to get out and not having much time to pack.

"We were not told until they knocked on our door," said Diamond Veney, who was holding her sleeping 1-year-old son, Tamir.

She said her family was given just 30 minutes to get out Friday evening.

Many of the displaced residents were being moved from hotel to hotel on Saturday. For some, the shift meant heading to a place that accepts pets.

On Saturday, crews moved some of the train cars around and brought in empty tankers to be used to store vinyl chlorine.

The NTSB's Hersman said investigators normally spend about a week documenting sites of accidents like this one. But she said it could take longer in this case because they will not go back to the site until it's declared safe. It was not clear when that may happen.

Meanwhile, NTSB staff members were focusing on records review, witness interviews and other tasks that do not require being on site. She said the board is also pursuing details of how the bridge was rebuilt after a coal train derailed there in 2009.

Hersman said investigators want to learn if the tidal surge from Superstorm Sandy may have caused problems at the bridge. Though it's in one of the parts of New Jersey least impacted by the storm, she said, the storm may have affected it.

Officials also were considering how and when to move the remaining chemical from the ruptured car.

Even without all details of the accident determined, New Jersey state Senate President Stephen Sweeney, a Democrat whose district includes Paulsboro, said it pointed to a bigger problem: An aging railroad infrastructure.

He said the 200-foot span at the center of this derailment originally went up in 1873. He said that accidents can happen anywhere, but "you have to make sure, at least, the infrastructure is as safe as it could be."

He said that because federal regulators oversee most freight rail issues, it's up to the federal government to push for, and perhaps pay for, upgrades.

Recent state and federal funding commitments totaling $28 million to improve rail infrastructure have not included the Paulsboro bridge, he said.
