HBT: Braun leaves game with groin injury

Ryan Braun had his fourth straight multi-hit game last night, going 2-for-5 with a homer in an extra-inning loss to the Giants, but exited in the 10th inning with a groin injury.

Asked afterward about his status, Braun wasn?t sure if he?d have to miss any starts and replied: ?We?ll see how it feels tomorrow.?

Braub also told Jordan Schelling of MLB.com that this groin injury is similar to one he dealt with during spring training, except ?it?s not as bad as it was then, so it?s not too serious.? He also missed one start earlier this month with a sore Achilles? tendon, but has played 40 of a possible 42 games while hitting .333 with 12 homers and a 1.049 OPS that tops his MVP-winning .994 mark from last season.

Not bad for a guy who at one point was banned from playing the first 50 games.

White Water Rafting Around The World

?

The extreme sport that is white water rafting is one that can be taking part in around the world. Across the globe there are plenty of places where you can ride in a raft down a fast flowing river bank. Some places are a lot more challenging than others but each is a unique and new experience. Depending on the level of excitement one is looking for, there will be a course perfect for you. Keen partakers in the water sport will love travelling around the world to raft and enjoy finding new places to complete the activity.

?

When it comes to white water rafting each place is graded according to their difficulty, with one being the easier routes and six being classed as the most dangerous. Around the world the difficulty grading changes.

Elements such as rocks, waves, manoeuvrability and water levels determine the danger level. Some places that are graded a six, should only be used by professionals and those with plenty of experience in the sport

?

It is always important to think about safety when choosing to white water raft in a new place. It may be fun to experience an exhilarating ride down a steep rapid, but you should never put lives at danger while doing so. Always consider the expertise of your team members, each person in the raft should be able to conquer the planned route. Safety equipment should always be used when riding on dangerous water. Life jackets and helmets should be worn at all times when rafting.

?

Environmental issues are also another element of the sport that you should consider. Nature conservation affects rivers too, so make sure you are not putting wildlife at danger when rafting. There are many places that incur regulations that will not allow you to ride on their water. Check before you travel to an area and make sure that you are authorized to use the river for rafting purposes. ?

?

So whether you choose to travel to America and ride the Hudson, the upper Navua in Fiji or Canada?s exciting Chilko, there is a route out there that is ideal. Both challenging and exciting, the wide range of rivers out there cater to a variety of levels. Before choosing any route always do your home work and make sure you have thoroughly researched the area where you plan to take part in the extreme sport that is white water rafting.?

iPhone app reads the minds of cats, dogs ... and stuffed unicorns

16 hrs.

Pets can be frustrating.?

Sometimes they just stare and stare?at you???as if you're supposed to?magically know exactly what they're thinking.

Well, an amusing (and free)?iPhone app helps defuse those awkward moments by suggesting what might be on your beloved pet's mind.

The app's called CrossTuner and it can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. All you have to do in order to use it is point your iPhone's back-facing camera at the confusing creature near you, select what it is (currently the only options are dog, cat and zombie), and speak.

As soon as the app detects sound, you'll see what it believes your pet is thinking.

Since I didn't have a cat, dog, or zombie on hand to test this app, I borrowed my co-worker's stuffed unicorn. CrossTuner happily revealed what the fluffy creature is thinking?? no matter what I claimed it was?? so I suppose it could work on anything or anyone, whether there's actual brain-activity involved or not.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts, or circling her?on?Google+.

The Wanted Tease 'Daring' Surprises On Next Album

Jay McGuiness tells MTV News they plan to redefine the boy band on the follow-up to 2011's Battleground.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/wanted_boy_band_/artist.jhtml">The Wanted</a> may be <a href="/news/articles/1684396/the-wanted-chasing-the-sun-ice-age-4-soundtrack.jhtml">"Chasing the Sun"</a> on the charts with their recently released U.S. debut EP, but the British boy banders aren't taking any breaks. Hot on the heels of the release, they are back in the studio, hard at work on their next proper release, a follow-up to 2011's <i>Battleground.</i></P><P>"Well, you know, it's going to be a new leaf for us because we've compiled all our three years of stuff into the EP, so now it's a new, fresh start for us," Jay McGuiness explained to MTV News. "The singles we started writing and recording, so far, we're excited about. But it's still gonna be parties for the Wanted. I think it's gonna be a few surprises too."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="The Wanted's New Album Will Be A 'Fresh Start'" id="vid:768763" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Those surprises could come in the form of some cameos on the in-the-works record. Siva Kaneswaran added, "[It] could be collabs or it could be rapping. There's not gonna be any rapping; I'm just kidding. But it is surprising for ourselves, too, because we are just going to try and be daring and try and step it up a bit, so hopefully the fans will like it."</P><P>While rapping won't make the final cut, the guys have teased that they'd love to get <a href="/news/articles/1683822/the-wanted-collaboration-justin-bieber-chris-brown.jhtml">Justin Bieber or Chris Brown</a> on board for the album. "We talked about it, and we have a song that we think he'd sound great on," McGuiness teased about working with Bieber.</P><P>"We've talked to Chris Brown as well, which would be really good," Kaneswaran revealed. "We talked to Chris actually at 'The Voice,' and he said he was down as well."</P><P>"We have got a song we think would be perfect," Max George added.</P><P>The bottom line is, the guys said, is they want to make good music that defies their <a href="/news/articles/1684030/the-wanted-defend-boy-bands.jhtml">boy-band label</a>. "We went out there and we're like, 'You know what? I think we can change people's perspectives of the '90s boy bands,' " Parker explained. Black hole emits humongous energy burst (+video)

An unusual brightness, documented by NASA's Chandra telescope appears to be coming from a black hole.

A NASA space telescope has detected an incredible energy burst from a distant black hole, an explosion so intense that it boosted the black hole's X-ray brightness by at least 3,000 times, scientists say.

Skip to next paragraph A NASA-hosted news conference in Washington highlights imagery and data captured by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory about the early universe's growth of supermassive black holes in galaxies.

The outburst came from a black hole in the spiral galaxy M83, about 15 million light-years away from Earth. Using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, astronomers found a new object, called an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX), ?that emits more X-rays than most "normal" systems in which a companion star orbits around a black hole or neutron star, the researchers said.

The observations from Chandra spanned several years, and scientists noticed that the ULX in M83 increased its X-ray brightness by at least 3,000 times.

This surprisingly sudden brightening is one of the largest changes in X-rays ever seen for this type of object, according to the researchers. In fact, ultraluminous X-ray sources do not typically have periods of dormancy. [Photos: Black Holes of the Universe]

In the accompanying image, the left is an optical view of M83. On the right is a composite image showing X-ray data from Chandra in pink and optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope in blue and yellow. The ULX is located near the bottom of the composite image.?

Optical images of the black hole in M83 were taken by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile. These images revealed a bright blue source where the ULX is located during the X-ray outburst. Yet, before the outburst, this blue source cannot be seen, the scientists said.

The discrepancy suggests that the companion to the black hole in M83 is a red giant star that is more than 50 million years old. The mass of this object is less than four times the mass of the sun, and according to theoretical models that predict the evolution of stars, the black hole in M83 should be almost as old as this companion red giant star.

The bright blue emission that could be seen during the X-ray outburst could be the black hole's disk brightening significantly as it acquires more material from its companion star, the astronomers said.

Another strangely behaved ULX from a black hole with an old, companion red giant star was found recently in the galaxy M31. These new discoveries in M83 and M31 show that there could be a population of similar black holes that are older and more volatile, the researchers said.

The mass of the ULX in M83 is estimated to be between 40 to 100 times the mass of the sun.

The astronomers also found that the black hole in this system may have formed from a star surprisingly rich in "metals," or elements that are heavier than helium. Based on previous observations, the ULX is located in a metal-rich region.

Large concentrations of metals increase the rate of mass lost from massive stars, siphoning mass before they collapse. This also decreases the mass of the resulting black hole.

Current theoretical models suggest that in regions highly rich in metals, only black holes with masses less than about 15 times that of the sun should form. As a result, the findings based on the ULX in M83 could dispute these models, the researchers said.

Another plausible explanation is that the black hole is so old that it formed at a time when heavy elements were much less abundant in M83, before metals were sprinkled throughout by later generations of supernovas. Astronomers are also investigating the possibility that the mass of the black hole in M83 is only about 15 times that of the sun.

'The Avengers': A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

We do our best to catalog each and every pop-culture nod, wink and jab featured in Marvel's ultimate crossover movie.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Chris Evans as Captain America In "The Avengers"
Photo: Walt Disney Studios

For as many epic fight scenes as "The Avengers" has, it has even more pop-culture Easter eggs sprinkled throughout. Thanks in large part to the combined efforts of writer/director Joss Whedon and snark master Robert Downey Jr., "The Avengers" is chock-full of witty pop-culture references worth dissecting and analyzing. So we did our best to catalog each and every nod, wink and jab featured in Marvel's ultimate crossover movie.

Here is your pop-culture cheat sheet for "Marvel's The Avengers."

AC/DC: The Australian rock group known for hits such as "Back in Black" and "Highway to Hell" appeared on the soundtracks for both "Iron Man" films and "The Avengers."

"Ant and boot": The analogy made by both Loki and Nick Fury could be references to Henry Pym, the Avenger known as Ant-Man.

Black Sabbath: The logo for the rock band lead by singer Ozzy Osbourne appears on the T-shirt Tony Stark wears throughout the film.

Flying monkeys: These creatures from creator L. Frank Baum, author of the "Oz" novels, are one of the few pop-culture references Captain America understands.

"Galaga": The 1981 space-shooter game is name-checked on the deck of the Helicarrier when Tony Stark mentions that he sees someone playing it.

Harry Dean Stanton: The legendary actor, known for roles in "Alien," "Red Dawn" and "Paris, Texas," makes a cameo as the very accepting security guard, who finds a post-Hulk, nude Bruce Banner.

James Bond: The scene featuring Black Widow during an interrogation parodies many of the spy-movie clichés made famous by Ian Fleming's most beloved character.

Jenny Agutter: The actress who played Alex Price in 1981's "An American Werewolf in London" and had a recurring role on the BBC series "The Railway Children" appears as a member of the World Security Council.

"Point Break": The 1991 surfing/bank robber movie stars Patrick Swayze, who sports long blond hair similar to Thor's in the movie, as Tony Stark is happy to point out.

Powers Boothe: This "Deadwood" actor also makes a cameo appearance as a member of the World Security Council.

"Reindeer Games": Loki's horned helmet reminds Tony Stark of the 2000 film starring Ben Affleck and Charlize Theron.

"Rock of Ages": Tony Stark may have been referencing the rock-based Broadway musical when making fun of Loki's locks.

Shakespeare in the Park: During Loki and Thor's argument in the forest, Iron Man references this dramatic-theater tradition.

Stan Lee: Arguably the most famous comic book writer ever, he co-created Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man and Thor. As is traditional in Marvel movies, Lee makes a cameo in "The Avengers."

Stephen Hawking: The world-renowned theoretical physicist, whose "A Brief History of Time" sold more than 10 million copies, is mentioned during a conversation among the Avengers.

"The Terminator": The 1984 James Cameron film features Arnold Schwarzenegger arriving in the present in a similar posture to the one Loki takes upon reaching Earth.

Tesseract: The film version of the Cosmic Cube, this Marvel trope has been around since 1966.

Check out everything we've got on "Marvel's The Avengers." For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney says he learns about what it's like to struggle in a difficult economy by sitting down to chat with regular people. But the Republican presidential candidate doesn't want anybody to see it ? and his campaign won't say who he meets with or when the meetings occur.

In interviews and on the campaign trail, Romney regularly says that he learns about the struggling economy by talking to people affected by it. Earlier this week, he said he meets with families "almost every day." On Friday, Romney said the talks are "off the record" ? and that he agrees to keep private the names of the people he meets with.

"Before I begin an event like this, I typically am able to sit down with a few people on an off-the-record kinda basis," Romney said as he delivered his standard campaign speech Friday in Pittsburgh.

"I agree not to say who they are to the members of my media," he said, before joking: "My media, I don't have my media, I wish I had my media. To members of the media."

That description was slightly different from one he offered on Tuesday.

"So far during my campaigns one of the highlights for me has been sitting down with three or four families almost every day without the camera there," he said during an interview with CBS News. "Most of them are done privately ? that is a wonderful way for me to understand how people are really feeling."

Aides did not respond to repeated requests for information about the meetings and the participants, including when the meetings take place, who has participated or even which states they are from. Aides also wouldn't say whether any meetings were held Thursday or Friday, when Romney campaigned in Virginia and Pittsburgh, respectively.

The meetings aren't listed on Romney's public schedule.

On Wednesday, a spokesman said Romney had no such private meetings before an appearance that day at a small business in Chantilly, Va.

"Almost every single small business.most every public event that we have, we have these middle-class families do a round-table with the governor," Romney spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said Wednesday when asked to explain what Romney said in Tuesday's television interview. "It's more productive to do it without the cameras. He hears from them about the Obama economy; he hears what their concerns are in the states."

Romney has held a few round-table events with voters while cameras were present.

He held one with veterans in South Carolina on Veterans Day last year, with housing industry businesspeople in Florida before the primary and with business owners in Nevada before the caucuses. After becoming the presumptive nominee, Romney held a round-table with Hispanic community leaders in Arizona.

He also meets regularly with the owners of the companies who host his campaign events. Almost all of Romney's stops on the trail are in warehouses or offices of local small businesses.

But instead of keeping these stories secret, he'll often incorporate them into his campaign speech as sad examples of a suffering economy or to highlight what America's entrepreneurial economy can do. There's a struggling barber, for example, who's putting off retirement. On the other hand, there's an immigrant who came to the U.S. and founded a company that helps with pioneering spinal surgery. Romney appeared at that company, NuVasive, in southern California in late March.

"I'm amazed by the hard work and the entrepreneurial spirit of the American people," Romney said Friday.

Infant version of Android gets a walkthrough on Google's Sooner development phone

Image

No, that's not a QWERTY feature phone you're looking at -- it's Google's earliest Android development device, the Sooner. While the HTC-sourced phone itself hasn't been a secret, the build of Android on this particular specimen, obtained by Steven Troughton-Smith, is something few eyes outside of Mountain View have seen. As Mr. Smith notes, this isn't the first public build of Android that was detailed in November 2007 (M3), but rather an earlier version from May of that same year. The non-touch UI is almost totally unlike what eventually shipped with the touch-friendly HTC Dream, aside from obviously housing Android's basic framework and apps including G Talk and the like. We won't spoil it for you, though, so hit up the source link below to see Smith's full walkthrough and analysis of the device that once served as the initial development vehicle for Android.

Android CentralThe official Facebook application for Android has received an update today, eliminating the much-maligned "Camera" and "Messenger" shortcuts within the app drawer. The apps were first bundled with Facebook in version 1.9, and have been criticized for potentially misleading users. An attempt was made in version 1.9.1 to remedy this with a small Facebook icons in the lower left corner, however now it seems the decision has been made to pull them entirely. No other changes seem to have been made in this latest version, and the Facebook Messenger app remains available as a separate download on the Google Play Store.

Inventive scribbler Steve King -- no, not that one -- is working his fingers raw trying to raise $25,000 on Kickstarter. His project, the colorfully-named Hand Stylus, works with all your capacitive touchscreens, sports a retractable nib that rotates to avoid uneven wear, and even sticks to the magnet on an iPad. While it can't replace the need for natural digits, it could potentially come in handy while taking notes, sketching, cooking, or experiencing frostbite. Skip down below the break for a video if you need more convincing, or you already lost the one that came with your Galaxy Note.

Logitech unveils its Solar Keyboard Folio for the new iPad and iPad 2, we go hands-on

Logitech unveils its Solar Keyboard Folio for the new iPad and iPad 2, we go hands-on

There are all sorts of ways to go green these days, from driving an EV to installing super efficient light bulbs, and now Logitech's given us an environmentally friendly way to type tactilely on a tablet. It's a new iPad and iPad 2-friendly case called the Solar Keyboard Folio, which packs a Bluetooth keyboard powered by ambient light using the same solar cell tech found on the firm's computer keyboards. Once topped up with photons, Logitech claims its battery will keep you typing for over 1,000 hours even in complete darkness. The case is crafted of black, soft-touch, faux leather embossed with a small Logitech logo and has perforations for the iPad's speakers, plus a portal for the tablet's camera.

Its keyboard is made of gray plastic, and pecking at the grid is a similar experience to using the one found on Logitech's other recently released iPad typing peripheral, the Ultrathin Keyboard Cover. Buttons are short-throw and provide satisfying clicky feedback, but the space bar and shift keys have a hollow feel when pressed. Perhaps the Folio's most intriguing design feature is the feet on the corners of the cradle in which the iPad is placed. Those little nubs allow for two viewing angles -- your slate can be seated in a more upright position behind the keyboard for typing, or in the notches outside the two shift keys for a more obtuse viewing angle when the keyboard isn't needed. What's this bit of green gear cost? It goes on sale in the US and Europe this month with an MSRP of $130.
